What is ventilation system D?
A ventilation system D is a mechanical balanced ventilation system with heat recovery. It uses a fan to exhaust stale air from humid rooms and simultaneously blows fresh, filtered air into living rooms and bedrooms. Thanks to a heat exchanger, up to 90% of the heat from the exhaust air is recovered and transferred to the supply air. This way you ventilate without heat loss.
Unlike system C, which only exhausts mechanically and supplies via vents, system D both supplies and exhausts mechanically. This gives you control over the amount of air and allows you to adjust ventilation to demand. The system is equipped with fine filters that capture pollen and fine dust, ideal for allergy sufferers. In Flanders, system D is mandatory for new-build homes that meet EPB requirements and is also highly recommended for major renovations due to its energy performance.
Everything about the operation, benefits and costs of ventilation system D
How does ventilation system D work?
The heart of the system is the ventilation unit with heat exchanger, usually installed in the attic, basement or technical room. From this unit, air ducts run to humid rooms (kitchen, bathroom, toilet, utility room) for exhaust of stale air, and to dry rooms (living room, bedrooms, office) for supply of fresh air. Two fans in the unit ensure the airflows. The heat exchanger, a cross-flow or counter-flow exchanger, transfers heat from the exhaust air to the supply air. Then the fresh air is filtered and distributed.
Most systems have a bypass function: in summer, when the outside temperature is higher than inside, the heat exchanger can be bypassed so you can ventilate with cooler outdoor air without heating up the home.
Advantages of ventilation system D
- Energy-efficient ventilation: Up to 90% heat recovery, significantly reducing your heating costs. In a well-insulated home, it can lower your E-level by 20 to 30 points.
- Continuously healthy indoor climate: Constant air renewal without drafts, with fine filtration of pollen and dust. Ideal for allergy sufferers.
- No wall vents: Because supply is mechanical, you don't need trickle vents above windows, which improves insulation and reduces outside noise.
- Quiet operation: With proper sizing and sound attenuation, you barely hear the system in living spaces.
Are there disadvantages to ventilation system D?
- Higher investment: Purchase and installation are higher than system C due to the dual mechanical drive and ductwork. On average, a complete system D for a home costs between €4,000 and €8,000, including installation.
- Maintenance: Filters must be replaced every 3 to 6 months (cost around €25 per set), and every 2 years the ducts need cleaning. Without proper maintenance, efficiency drops and air quality can deteriorate.
- Installation during renovation: In existing homes, placing air ducts can be a challenge, but with smart custom solutions it is almost always possible, especially in Flemish houses with sufficient space.
Difference between ventilation system C and D
System C exhausts mechanically and supplies naturally via window vents. It is simpler and cheaper, but you always feel drafts near the vents and heat is lost. System D offers heat recovery and filters the supplied air. For new construction, system D is the standard; for major renovations it is often the best choice if you aim for a low E-level. What does ventilation system D cost in 2025?
The price depends on the size of your home, the type of unit (airflow rate, heat exchanger efficiency), the brand (such as Vasco, Renson, Zehnder...), and the complexity of installation. For an average single-family home of 150 m², you pay for a basic system D including installation from about €5,000 to €7,000. For a more luxurious version with higher efficiency, CO₂ control and app control, it can go up to €10,000. Request a no-obligation quote tailored to your project.
Can I install a ventilation system D myself?
We strongly advise against installing a balanced ventilation system yourself. Installation requires specialist knowledge of airflows, duct airtightness, acoustic damping and EPB certification. Mistakes lead to noise, drafts, energy loss or an invalid EPB declaration. Always choose a certified installer, like ours, who has experience in your region.
Maintenance of ventilation system D
Regular maintenance is crucial for efficiency and lifespan. Replace filters every 3 to 6 months (depending on pollution and filter class). Have the ducts inspected and cleaned at least every 2 years to prevent mould and resistance. We offer tailored maintenance contracts: discover our maintenance service.
Applications
Ventilation System D in Different Situations
From new construction to office, every project requires an appropriate ventilation approach. Discover how system D works in your environment.
New-build homes
In Flanders, system D is mandatory for new construction with high EPB requirements. We design the ventilation plan, install and certify.
Major renovations
For energy renovations towards BEN level, system D is often the best choice. We cleverly integrate the ductwork.
Apartments
In apartments too, central or decentralised balanced ventilation is possible. We work together with the syndic.
Offices and businesses
For businesses we install ventilation systems D that meet standards for healthy indoor climate, with CO₂ control.
Everything else you want to know about ventilation system D
How much noise does a ventilation system D make?
A properly installed system D is barely audible in living spaces. The noise level is typically 25-30 dB(A) on the lowest setting, comparable to whispering. In the installation room (attic/utility room) you hear a soft hum. What is the best brand of ventilation system D?
There are several quality brands such as Vasco, Renson and Zehnder. The best brand depends on your specific living situation and requirements regarding efficiency and control. Our advisors are happy to help you with that choice, independent of any one manufacturer. Is ventilation system D mandatory for renovation?
For major energy renovations (IEP) or when you bring the E-level to BEN level, balanced ventilation is often required. For smaller renovations it is not mandatory, but it remains a smart investment in comfort and energy savings. How long does a heat exchanger last?
The lifespan of a heat exchanger in a ventilation system D averages 15 to 20 years, provided regular maintenance. The unit itself can last up to 25 years. Replacing the exchanger is a relatively simple procedure. What is the difference between a cross-flow and counter-flow heat exchanger?
A cross-flow exchanger passes the air streams perpendicularly, with an efficiency up to 85%. A counter-flow exchanger flows the air in opposite directions, so efficiency can rise to 95% and energy consumption is lower, but it is slightly more expensive. How much electricity does a ventilation system D consume?
Modern systems D consume on average 50 to 150 watts per hour during normal use. Annually, that amounts to about 200 to 500 kWh, which depending on your energy rate comes to €50 to €150 in electricity costs.
