How to choose the right ventilation system and how the installation proceeds
A ventilation system installation is a smart investment in your health and living comfort. But which system suits your home or business? We explain clearly.
The four ventilation systems at a glance
In Flanders, we distinguish systems A, B, C and D. Each with a different air supply and exhaust.
- System A: natural supply via grilles in the windows, natural exhaust via vertical ducts. Little control, highly dependent on wind and temperature. Simple, but not always sufficient.
- System B: mechanical supply, natural exhaust. Rarely used in homes.
- System C: natural supply via grilles, mechanical exhaust via a central fan. Popular in renovations, because it is relatively easy to install. More about ventilation system C
- System D: mechanical supply and exhaust with heat recovery. The most energy-efficient choice, because the heat from the exhaust air is reused. Ideal for new builds and thorough renovations. Discover ventilation system D
How does the installation proceed?
A professional installer first comes to your home for a non-binding consultation. Together you look at the options, he measures the airflows and draws up a routing plan. Then the installation follows in two to three days, depending on the type of system and the complexity of the home.
The professional installs the ventilation unit (usually in the attic or cellar), drills the passages for the ducts, assembles the piping and places the grilles in the ceilings or walls. Everything is neatly finished and adjusted for an optimal airflow. After inspection, you receive the ventilation report.
Why not install a ventilation system yourself?
Installing it yourself may seem cost-effective, but an incorrectly placed system can lead to noise nuisance, draughts, high energy costs or even mould due to incorrect airflows. A certified installer guarantees correct sizing and an inspection certificate that is often required for grants. Compare ventilation installers in your region
What does it cost to have a ventilation system installed?
The price depends on the system, the size of the home and any additional work. For a system C, count on €2,500 to €4,000 including installation. System D is more expensive, from €6,000 to €10,000 or more, but you save on heating costs annually. Thanks to grants from Fluvius and possible local subsidies, you get part of it back. The best time to install
Autumn is ideal. By the time it gets colder, you enjoy a healthy indoor climate without unnecessary heat loss. Moreover, installers are often less busy than in winter, so you get an appointment sooner. Plan your installation preferably in September or October.

Costs and grants
What determines the price of installing a ventilation system?
The final cost is made up of the type of system, the surface area of the home and the number of rooms you want to ventilate. Also the chosen brand, extra functions such as CO2 control and the complexity of the installation play a role. Fortunately, there are various grants that reduce your investment.
- Ventilation system C: from €2,500 incl. installation
- Ventilation system D: from €6,000, with payback time through energy savings
- Fluvius grant up to €4,000 for system D in new build or renovation
- Local municipal grants on top of the Fluvius grant

What others also ask about ventilation systems
What does it cost to install a ventilation system in an average terraced house?
The price ranges between €2,500 for a simple system C and €8,000 for a system D. The exact cost depends on the type, size and accessibility. Therefore always request a customised quote.Which ventilation system is most suitable for an existing home?
For existing homes, system C is often the best choice. It uses the existing grilles and exhausts mechanically, making it easy to install. Is your home well insulated? Then system D can offer more comfort. How much grant can I get for a ventilation system in Flanders?
Via Fluvius you get up to €4,000 for a system D in new build or thorough renovation. Some municipalities add an extra grant on top. Check the conditions in advance. What is the difference between ventilation system C and D?
System C mechanically extracts air, but fresh air enters via grilles. System D both blows and extracts mechanically, with heat recovery that recovers up to 90% of the heat. That makes D more energy-efficient, but also more expensive to purchase. How often should I have my ventilation system maintained?
A mechanical ventilation system requires annual maintenance: cleaning or replacing filters, checking ducts for contamination and lubricating the motor. This maintains optimal performance and prevents breakdowns. Can I combine a ventilation system with a heat pump?
Yes, a ventilation air/water heat pump extracts heat from the exhaust ventilation air. That can yield additional savings. Ask for advice whether this is possible in your situation.
